Abacus Associates
has polled for Departments of Transportation in a number of states.
Projects include:
- Public Attitudes
Toward Transportation Funding and Revenue in Michigan. Survey
of 1100 Michigan adults that explored ways to pay for improvements
to the Michigan transportation system. (MDOT 2007)
- Public Attitudes
Toward Transportation in Michigan, MDOT State Long-Range Transportation
Plan (2005 - 2030). Two surveys in 2006 that were used to help
MDOT develop a preferred public vision for their long range plan.
The
first survey can be found here. More about the long-range plan
can
be found here. (MDOT 2006)
- Public Satisfaction
with Missouri Department of Transportation, Missouri. Annual surveys
measuring public satisfaction with MoDOT and its projects. (MoDOT
2005, 2006)

Behavior and Public Opinion on Motorcycle Helmet Law, Missouri.

existing helmet law in Missouri. (MoDOT 2005)
- Public Opinion
Toward Safety Belts, Missouri. This survey measured public opinion
toward strengthening safety belt laws and usage of safety belts in
Missouri. (MoDOT 2005)
- Missouri Advance
Planning (MAP), Missouri. In this study, we surveyed 3100 Missouri
adults on their evaluations of MoDOT and the transportation system
in Missouri and their preferences for transportation policy priorities
in the future. Information
on the MAP project can be found here. (MoDOT 2005).
- Grandview
Triangle Design, Kansas City, Missouri. This report tracked traffic
patterns and explored neighbors' and commuters' opinions of the approaching
Grandview Triangle Construction Project in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Missouri Department of Transportation is using the recommendations
in this report to help meet the needs of neighbors and commuters and
to build support for the project as it progresses. The public involvement
efforts for this program received an Excel Award from the American
Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. (MoDOT
1998, 2001).
- Greensboro
Department of Transportation (GDOT), Greensboro, North Carolina.
GDOT identified a number of transportation improvements as part of
a comprehensive program entitled Transportation 2010. Abacus conducted
focus groups and surveys to seek community input to refine Transportation
2010 and build support for its projects. On Election Day 2000, Greensboro
voters were faced with about ten bond issues--many of which failed.
Because of GDOT's public involvement efforts, voters approved both
bond initiatives for transportation projects, giving the Department
much-needed funding to implement its transportation vision. (GDOT
1998, 2000).
- Light Rail
Transit System in Kansas City, Missouri. This study explored voters'
opinions of a light rail transit system in Kansas City, Missouri and
recommended a persuasive message and strategy for a future campaign
to build local support. (Kansas City Area Transportation Authority,
1997).
- The Kansas
Transamerica Transportation Corridor Feasibility Study. This study
assessed Kansans' opinions of current highways and future possibilities
for funding and improving highways. The study presented recommendations
relating to an electronic system for collecting tolls (K-TAG), building
an improved southern highway across Kansas, and improving the image
of KDOT. (KDOT/ Kansas Turnpike Authority, 1996).
- Building an
Infrastructure to Support Economic Development, Ecuador. President
Jamil Mahuad of Ecuador hired Abacus to consult with him and his cabinet
on a public involvement campaign to build Ecuador's infrastructure,
with a central focus on developing a system of transportation in a
country with limited resources for investment. (Ecuador, 1999)
